2012

San Francisco is a river crossing north of the city of Esteli. The crossing serves 7 communities, nearly one thousand people. During the rainy season, the river is swift and deep, making crossing difficult by horse and nearly impassable otherwise.

Before NDSEED's 2012 bridge, conditions like this left several villages stuck without access to markets for food, clinics for health care, and school for education. On several occasions, people were left stranded for weeks at a time without life's basic necessities. Their bridge has provided the safest crossing of this river to the people who live near San Francisco.

Notre Dame Students Empowering through Engineering Development (NDSEED) was formed in 2008 when six civil engineering students decided to combine their academic interests with their passion for service in support of their university’s mission. Today, their vision still lives on: NDSEED has worked on 12 bridges in 4 countries under the leadership of 116 Notre Dame students.
