2019

During the summer of 2019, the team successfully constructed a suspended footbridge in the rural community of Mallkuchusi, Bolivia. The bridge crosses the Rio Mallkuchusi which passes through the nearby communities of Mallkachusi, Cobre Villa, and Janco Marca. This project was a continuation of the Mallkuchusi Bridge, which NDSEED began in the spring of 2018. During which, the team quickly realized that excavations in the rock would be exceedingly difficult and posed a significant challenge. In 2019 the NDSEED team for the Mallkuchusi Bridge Project Phase II proposed a nonstandard anchor design to reduce the required excavation volume in the challenging rock conditions. During the 2019 build season, NDSEED was able to construct the non-standard anchor with the assistance of the local community in approximately 11 weeks. The completed pedestrian bridge has a span of 96.2 meters and now serves the 63 people of Mallkuchusi as well as the 80 people of Cobre Villa and Janco Marca.

Notre Dame Students Empowering through Engineering Development (NDSEED) was formed in 2008 when six civil engineering students decided to combine their academic interests with their passion for service in support of their university’s mission. Today, their vision still lives on: NDSEED has worked on 12 bridges in 4 countries under the leadership of 116 Notre Dame students.
